‘Support the Troops’ What does it Mean?
Explaining the Movement -Op-ed by Catherine Whelan Costen
Canadian Action Party President
Am I a patriot if I don’t support the war? Can I support the human being called ‘a soldier’ and not support his orders to kill in my name? Absolutely! Canadian Action Party joins with thousands of people across the globe to embrace truth and solutions for our troubled world. As we all know the first casualty of war is truth. The first step to peace is to shine the light on deception wherever it hides. This new age of war has no beginning and seemingly no end. It is the endless pursuit of power and empire building that impoverishes and destroys whatever stands in its path.
The boots of globalization are extra large, steel toed, with cleats and absolutely no flexibility. Many who work in the corporate world are insulated against the truth of their contributions and impact on civilization. We reach out to them in the hope they will accept truth and help us to dispel the lies. Others are very aware and do not care. Those who wear the boots wear them with false pride. Those who feel the boots on their backs endure the never ending bruises and scars of oppression, poverty and hopelessness which leads to desperation and violence. In the past ‘Support the Troops’ was a morale mantra. Support the Troops was meant to remind us of the sacrifice these people were willing to pay in order to stop Hitler’s world domination insanity. Of course we had no idea then that the American Industrialists were bankrolling the German Nazi’s but alas that was then. Nothing has changed. The same big money supplies the warmongers today while making a handsome profit and the people pay the price. Are we supporting the troops when we commit them to Corporate wars? How does our government support them when they come home with toxins from depleted uranium and other weapons of mass destruction? What manner of support is available to them and their families? Is it a morale booster to see our government refusing to lower our national flag when these soldiers die for the corporate mission? Why don’t they just say what they mean? Support the War is the meaning behind Support the Troops. We do not support War!
It was so successful in the past; they’re playing it again… why not use it for today’s pursuit of world domination? The difference is yesterday our soldiers and civilians were trying to stop the insanity; today we are tricked into embracing insanity. The troops are human beings, young men and women who are trained to follow orders. There is no place in a soldier’s mind to examine the politics behind their mission. It is our place to stand up on their behalf and on behalf of all of humanity. We speak for those who cannot. We can ‘support the troops’ and NOT the War. We can ‘support the troops’ by opposing Globalization. We can and do Support the Troops when we say NO to Chevron! We are supporting the troops when we say ‘Tell the Truth’, and by not supporting the Empire builders. It is the most patriotic act we can embrace to say ‘No more Blood shed in Our Name’.
The atmosphere of war forces people to take sides. Who is right and who is wrong must be determined and then we shall support the right side. ‘With Us or Against Us’ is a slogan which has gained much exposure and unleashed a great deal of aggression, revenge and misguided patriotism. Why not ‘With Humanity and Against Warmongers? The fact is that no one is standing on the side of human beings or the planet, as long as we embrace war. We can stand with the soldier and against the violence. We can recognize that sending our youth into a toxic battlefield while more toxins are unleashed on the planet and the innocent people who inhabit the area, is the greatest horror known to mankind. We as human beings can love our youth, our troops, enough to say ‘No more War! Keep the Peace!’. We can revisit the mantra of our Vets when they said, ‘Never Again’ and ‘it was Our War but their legacy’. Those are mantras of hope and truth. We can say, ‘No more empire building; we will not support Chevron; we will not support the greed behind the war’. We will not support the corporations who are making profits off of the destruction and carnage of this war machine.
Alternative sources of energy either exist or are being discovered, but very little effort or money is being dedicated to these efforts. Let us explore this option. If environmentally friendly alternatives to oil were produced, marketed and used, who would suffer and who would benefit? If alternatives were available today the demand for oil would eliminate the need to build a pipeline across the Middle East and the domino effect would kick in. There would be no need to control the countries that hold the resources. This would create a huge loss of profits for munitions manufacturers as well as manufacturers in rebuilding the towns, villages and cities destroyed. All things related to this war machine would cease to be necessary. So you can see peace is not embraced by some as a profitable industry. However, it could be if we chose it. If the guns were prevented from flowing instead of marketed to various regions, along with the drug trade’s need for military protection we would be looking at a different reality. The gun and drug trade is a marriage which thrives on violence and is very profitable to some.
We are desensitized to the language of war. War on Terror, War on Drugs, War on Poverty, these are examples of words that help to create fear. We can’t ‘cut and run’ because to do so would somehow make us cowards. Yet even a small child knows it takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight than to engage in violence. What word is rightfully used for a person standing behind a fortress throwing bombs on people with sticks and stones? Coward comes to mind. That is a truth that we know and most human beings believe. Today those who abhor war, sacrificing people for oil, power and money are labelled cowards. That’s just another fable.
Up until now our words have been ignored and our money is being poured into the warmongers machinery. Who profits from war? Who pays the price? We support those innocent people who are paying the price for our not standing up to those who are profiting from war. We are not innocent bystanders. We are participants. We must take our share of responsibility in a free and democratic society and ensure that our politicians take their orders from us. Today the soldier takes his orders to kill from the politician, who takes their orders from the corporate rulers and empire builders. Where do we fit into this democratic equation? So we say it is time for those who wish to play war to go to war and see if it is truly a game. We say, ‘Support the Troops….draft a politician…bring our kids home’. I am not certain the soldier would wish to trust a politician to protect his back. So the troops can come home and let the politicians wage their war against each other. Of course basic training itself might prove enough for the politicians to return to diplomacy, if not a closer look at the carnage they are endorsing might be enough to bring peace.
The people must reject the double-speak we are being indoctrinated with on a regular basis. The story of the little wooden boy with the growing nose could not be written today. He would have grown a new head each time he ‘mis-spoke’ and the new head would declare, “Oh father, we must have had a break in our intelligence”’ or “Father, how dare you challenge the security of my person” or “I cannot reveal the details of this matter at this time, as the intelligence is unclear but I do hear a lot of chatter”.
All the wonderful fables of childhood which were meant to teach lessons and help children overcome fear, are being played out before our eyes. Reality has become fabulism. We are led to believe that there really is a big bad wolf, an ogre, and a wicked witch and now they tell us that they live in our neighbourhood. The story is woven day after day and the fear heightens; perhaps under our bed or on our planes, trains and who knows where? But it isn’t the bogey man that is listening to our phone conversations, or screening our personal information, or wanting our biometric information and eye scans. It isn’t the big bad wolf that is creeping into our homes and taking away our freedom. It isn’t Godzilla that is tromping over the globe crushing homes, hospitals and schools. Fabulism leads to the concept that if you don’t support the war, you must be unpatriotic. There is a difference between being patriotic to an undemocratic government and being patriotic to your country. Fabulism sees dead innocent women, children and men not as victims like those in the World Trade Centre, but as simply collateral damage. This is absurd. We must stand up for the truth. Terrorism is exactly what it says; a method of keeping people living in terror in order to control them. What do you fear? Why do you fear? Who do you fear? We live with such a heightened state of fear that our senses are going mad and as was intended we are tuning out the truth.
The truth is the people do not need to fear each other. Every parent wants nothing but life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for their families. Every human being can be pushed to the point of a desperate act in their attempts to grasp the shreds of survival. The troops do not want to kill for us. They are ordered to do so. We need to change the orders. The people are the government in a democratic nation. We give the orders. So whether we chose to ignore it or not, we are culpable for the actions of those we pay to represent us on the world stage. Are you getting your money’s worth? We are the mind; they are the mouth. Do they speak your language? We think its time that saying ‘Support the Troops’ means just that and only that and that saying NO to WAR means NO, not any war in our name! Canadian Action Party is pleased to offer Canadians the opportunity to wear their patriotism on their backs, in solidarity with all those who feel the weight of the suits in steel toed boots!
